David L. Edwards ended his career as a Pathologist in 1979, when he set sail from Los Angeles on a six year transoceanic adventure aboard his 31- foot ketch, AZULAO, winding up on the island of Ischia in Italy.  He began doing sculpture seriously in 1985 in Ischia where he  lived before coming to Olympia in 1991.

David's work  has been widely exhibited in the South Puget Sound area. He has participated  in many Arts Walks in Olympia and Shelton.  He has won acclaim in juried shows including the Western Washington Fair in Puyallup  (second place in sculpture, twice) and best in show in several  local art shows.

He is an active member of the North West Stone Sculptors Association and has participated in that organization's  annual Sculpture Symposium at Camp Brotherhood from 1992 to the present.  He is also an active member of Arts Olympia.

ARTIST'S  STATEMENT

The works  I create are almost exclusively subtractive sculpture done in stone or wood.  I derive my inspiration and  designs primarily from the piece of stone or wood itself, and try to follow the suggestions of the material and liberate the form that I envision within the raw material.

My subject matter is primarily fairly representational to slightly abstract forms based on human or non-human animals.  I try as much as possible to capture a feeling of motion or dynamic interest in the design.

In most instances I like to retain as part of the finished work some remnant of the raw stone or wood from which it emerged.  In this fashion, especially with stone, one can maintain a connection not only with the current subject matter (biologic age), but also with the geologic age (stone) or  growth  time frame (wood) of  the basic material.  To me this added dimension of a vastly different time frame enhances the impact of the work.
